Differences between Tortoise and Turtle

Turtles and tortoises are reptiles from the Testudines family. The fundamental distinction between the two is that turtle is the name given to water-occupants and tortoise is the name given to land-inhabitants.

The life span of turtles is short compared to the tortoise, turtles live for 20-40 years and some up to 80 years, whereas tortoise lives for 80 to 150 and may go beyond 200 years.

Turtles are found in Africa and America. Most of the tortoises are found in Asia, Africa, and America. Turtle shells are lighter and more streamlined than that of a tortoise. Both are more common as pets, but tortoises are easier to care for.
