The Mukhya Shivaganas (attendants of Shiva) in Hindu tradition are 108 in number, hence Shaiva sects, notably Lingayats, employ malas of 108 beads for prayer and meditation. Similarly, Lord Krishna in Brindavan had 108 disciples called as gopis in Gaudiya Vaishnavism.

The Vedic cosmology states, the distance between earth & sun is 108 times the diameter of sun distance between earth and moon is 108 times the diameter of moon.
