The basilisk lizard of central America, runs over the water on its hind legs to escape from danger, while it is near a river or lake. It does not sink because of its high speed and its fringed toes that spread its weight.
A basilisk has been seen to cross a 400 meters wide lake without sinking. It can swim strongly and is also able to dive, remaining under water for long periods, until the danger is passed.
