The fox, which once roamed the whole Sierra Nevada mountain range, is now only found in two small groups in California: one in the area of Lassen Volcanic National Park and the other in the vicinity of Sonora Pass.
A melanistic variation of the red fox is the silver fox (Vulpes vulpes). Silver foxes have a wide range of pelt characteristics. Some have a tail tip that is painted white, giving them a somewhat silvery appearance, while others are entirely glossy black.
