There are differences between the two in terms of flavor and uses, even though you shouldn’t confuse peppermint and spearmint when choosing which variety to use in your dish.
What is Peppermint?
The herb peppermint has a strong, almost spicy flavor. Although peppermint may be the more well-known of the two, it is actually a natural cross between water mint and spearmint. This explains why it is significantly more effective than its equivalent. Because peppermint is a hybrid of two mint varieties, it has a higher menthol concentration. The chemical component known as menthol is what gives mouthwashes their unmistakable and well-liked chilling sensation.
What is Spearmint?
In contrast to peppermint, spearmint has a delicate flavor and aroma that are frequently compared to sweetness. Its flavor comes from the chemical component carvone, which is much more subdued than the menthol stated above and doesn’t produce the same cooling effect. The uses of spearmint are mostly limited to the culinary and commercial sectors (think shaving creams and toothpaste). It can, however, reduce nausea and hiccups, which are two prominent healing effects.
